Mrs. Havisham, in her earlier years, had fallen in love with a man named Compeyson. It turns out that this guy only wanted her for money. She is basically left at the alter while Comeyson takes off with her money. Mrs. Haveisham wants to seek revenge on someone, anyone. Pip seems to have fit the bill. Miss. Havisham sets up a romance between Pip and her adopted daughter Estelle. Then she sends Estelle to France who eventually marries someone else. Miss. Havisham discovers that she has broken pips heart but this brings no satisfaction to her. She realizes that she has only caused more pain,
"Until you spoke to [Estella] the other day, and until I saw in you a looking-glass that showed me what I once felt myself, I did not know what I had done. What have I done! What have I done!"
