What information does Pip give Magwitch? Why does he withhold information about Compeyson?

Pip warns Magwitch that he is in danger of being discovered. He also tells him that in order to be careful, Herbert will act as their go between. Pip leaves out the information about Compeyson because he doesn't want Magwitch to worry anymore than he has to.
