Great Expectations

When Pip first sees Miss Havisham, he describes her as being all dressed in white. After his vision adjusts, he realizes she is actually grayed and yellowed. Why does Dickens describe her in these contradictory ways?

Mrs. H is shown to be sickly both in mind and spirit He white dress represents her jilted wedding. She looks the part of a grandmother but feels detached rotting away.
