Why does Joe put up with Mrs. Joe's abuse?

Joe is a very forgiving, easy-going man who seems content with his life and his life style.  Although we do not think Mrs. Joe should be so abusive, Joe seems to believe that once you make a commitment, you should stick to it.  He married her; he will be with her through thick and thin.
