Why does Magwitch say Pip cannot appreciate freedon the way he does? How accurate is this theory?

I think he means that Pip can't truly experience freedom until he has lost it. Even when Magwitch isn't in jail he spends much of his time running away. This makes freedom all the more precious to him.
