define mechanical. what does gardner mean when he describes processes and begin as "mechanical"?

I'm not totally sure what you are meaning but I'll try. Grendel doesn't see the processes of the world as cosmic mysteries full of Gods and divine interference. Instead Grendel sees the processes of the world as ruled by brute force and the very mechanical nature of life and death.
