Explain the mood in the last paragraph of Chapter One.

Grendel's mood is almost one of hopelessness. As he ponders his twelve year war against the Geats, he comes to understand (or feel) that he is nothing more than a rung in a turning wheel. History repeats itself constantly, and he is simply a tool in the wheel of life.
