In what ways is this book's narrative style and structure continuing to change?

Gardner always seems to be experimenting with style. Much of the novel utilizes a stream of consciousness style of narration. Then it can switch to a lyrical poetic style and then to a traditional script-like style of writing and finally mimic the style of the original poem. This gives the story more depth than even the original Beowulf.
