Grendel accepts the Shaper's view on religion. Although he doesn't believe it, he thinks it is a beautiful lie. This gives Grendel a sense of identity he has never had. He tries to communicate with the humans out of a sense of brotherhood. Although they speak the same language, Grendel is repelled by the Danes. In the end Grendel's only connection with people is to fight them.
