Is this really in the novel?
You've placed your question under the wrong heading. This question relates to "Three Men in a Boat (To say nothing of the Dog)."
The men gathered wood, made a fire, peeled and scaped potatoes (badly), added more unpeeled potatoes, put in cabbage and peas, and then believing there wasn't enough on the pot preceeded to add all of the leftovers in their hampers. These leftovers included half a pork pie, boiled bacon, a few eggs, and some salmon. It's hard to believe, but the end result was described as delicious.
"It was a great success, that Irish stew. I don’t think I ever enjoyed a meal more. There was something so fresh and piquant
about it."
