how does gulliver change the behavior of the people of liliput towards him?

At first, Gulliver seems to be afraid of the people in Lilliput, and although the reader understands he could escape and overcome them at any time he chooses not to. Gulliver gains their trust, and he gains his freedom through cunning and cordiality rather than force.
