Who was Mr bates ? How did he help gulliver?

There is not much information about him other than he helps Gulliver set up his medical practice in London. 

Mr.James Bates was an eminent surgeon in London. Gulliver was bound apprentice under him for four years.

Mr. Bates proved to be very helpful in Gulliver's medical practice.He was his master,encouraged him and recommended  him to several patients. 

Since Gulliver was not able to study college fulfilly he met with a great surgeon known as Mr. james Bates.Mr. James helped Gulliver in his Medical Practices.This in turn Made Gulliver to work with Mr. James for 4 years.
