Why do the Lilliputians believe Gulliver's pocket watch might be his god?

The Liliputians believe Gulliver's watch to be his god because he told them that he never did anything without consulting it. We understand that Gulliver was referring to checking the time..... the Lilliputians inferred this to mean he depended upon its advice.
