how useful does jared diamond deem religion for the average Joe in society? Chapter 14

Diamond never flat out giveshis opinion on the usefulness of religion. He does however infer that for some, religion is a means of avoiding conflict...... it keeps people from killing each other. On the other hand, he also cites that religion can have the exact opposite affect...... that for some, religion is a reason for risking their lives..... a reason for not fearing their own deaths.
