Claudius' soliloguy in this scene reveals quite a bit about his character (3.3,38-75). what do we learn about him? what die we learn about how he received the play earlier?

THe play shocked him into this brief display of remorse at the altar. He knows his sin well, "Oh, my offence is rank. It smells to heaven. It hath the primal eldest curse upon 't,. A brother's murder. Pray can I not." Still this shows that Claudius does have a conscience and it has been caught; he is just too slimy to come clean.
