Hamlet

Hamlet

With the exception of Horatio, all the characters resort to deceptions and subterfuge to "catch the carp of truth". What are some examples of how and why this is done in the play?

Shakespeare wanted to portray Denmark as a rotten state plagued by the sins of flawed characters. Claudius kills his brother, Gertrude weds Claudius, Polonius uses Ophelia, Hamlet uses Ophelia...the list goes on. In this mess of deception, truth becomes clouded in the fog of morality, passion, and greed. I find much of the truth in the last act when Hamlet muses about life, death, and a king going through "the guts of a beggar"!
