Hamlet

Sc. 5, Lines 25–32

Sc. 5, Lines 25–32: What does the revelation made by the Ghost mean for Hamlet? Why might knowing his father was murdered create a conflict for Hamlet?

Hamlet. O God!

Ghost. Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.

Hamlet. Murder?

Ghost. Murder most foul, as in the best it is, But this most foul, strange, and unnatural.

Hamlet. Haste me to know ’t, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge.

Hamlet already dislikes his Uncle Claudius. He is angry that his mother married him and that Claudius has already set himself up as the "goodly king" in his father's place. Finding out about the murder just adds fuel to Hamlet's hatred of Claudius. Hamlet resolves to make his avenging of his father his only concern.
