Was Polonius the Lord Chamberlain during Hamlet's father's reign? Did Polonius have knowledge of Claudius' plot?

I suppose you could call Polonius the Lord Chamberlain. He is the main advisor and involved in lots of the little plots. However, there is no evidence that he knew about Claudius's plot. It is unlikely Claudius would trust Polonius with such information.
