Why was Laertes so eager to avenge his father?

Initially, Laertes didn't show much love for his father. Why was he so eager to avenge his death? Was he obliged to?

For Laertes this is an issue of honor. His desire to avange his father's death is instantaneous. It isn't something he has to think about. Hamlet thinks, Laertes acts.
