In Charles Dickens's Hard Times, Mr. Bounderby's favorite speech—or rather, his favorite kind of speech—is his self-aggrandizing boast about being a "self-made man."

He constantly reminds anyone who will listen that he was born in a ditch, abandoned by his mother, and raised in poverty, yet through his own grit and determination became a wealthy banker and manufacturer. He uses this story to justify his harsh treatment of others (especially his workers) and to claim moral superiority.

I found Bounderby’s favorite speech quite reflective of the societal views of hard work. It reminds me of my own experience navigating workplace dynamics, where perception often outweighs reality.
