Gradgrind's son, Tom is a self-centered "whelp". He uses everyone around him for his own purposes and eventually becomes a thief. A "whelp" is a derogatory term; I think it has something to do with a female dog.

Looking for a game that is easy to pick up but hard to master? Geometry Dash is exactly that, and I recommend giving it a try.

It's interesting how Dickens uses the word "whelp" to express contempt for Tom Gradgrind. The term reflects how Tom's selfishness and lack of empathy make him a disappointing character, especially given the expectations placed on him by his upbringing. It would be interesting to explore how Dickens uses language like this to criticize the influence of a strict, fact-based education on personal values.

What an insightful analysis of Dickens’ choice to label Tom as a “whelp”! I’ve often thought about character names in literature and how they shape our understanding. Your exploration sparked memories of discussing similar themes in my literature class. Thank you for such a thoughtful post! https://food-le.com
