Haroun and the Sea of Stories
why are the people in the city so sad?
in the beginning of the book it says the city is sad, so sad it has forgotten its own name. why are they so sad?

We aren't ever really told why the city is sad and depressed, or why Haroun and his family are happy. We assume that Haroun's stories are the basis of his happiness, and his popularity comes from the fact that his cheerfulness is sought out by the people in the city. Eventually though....... the sadness affects his own wife and family.
