The binoculars make Marlow's surroundings a reality. Up until the time he looked through the binoculars, Marlow didn't really see his surroundings, he assumed the fence to have ornate spheres, which were used for decoration. Finding they were in fact severed heads was not a surprise, but it was a reality check.
