marlow says "...breathe dead hippo,so to speak, and not be contaminated." To what does this comment refer?

I think he is referring to Kurtz here who is dead or dying. He doesn't want him to become like the rotten contaminated hippo meat. There is a whole metaphorical level to this but I'll leave it for now.
