This is an extremely open question, but if I had to take a stab at it, I'd suggest something like the following: the "Heart of Darkness" is the innermost, unaccountable sin that lies with everyone we call human. Far from any sort of romanticized self, Conrad wants to remind everyone that we are ultimately a tragedy unto ourselves.
Heart of Darkness was one of the first literary texts to provide a critical view of European imperial domination. I think that Conrad wanted to paint a portrait of what happens when Victorian values, modern "commerce" and indigenous people collide. Conrad is most adept at illustrating a sense of chaos among the Imperialists and a sad resignation among the exploited natives.
