Conrad makes use of some god-imagery in the novel; Marlow sits "cross-legged" like an "idol"; he directly cites him as being "like Buddha;" and in Chapter 3 describes him as a "meditating Buddha."

Conrad frames the novel by making specific references to Buddha both at the beginning and end of the story. Marlow becomes a spiritual figure and a teacher.
