why is the climate an important feture in this passage? what is its aignificance to the novel as a whole?

"anything- anything can be done in this country. thats what i say; nobody here, you understand, here can endanger your positon. and why? you stand the climate-you outlast them all?(58) - the uncle, leader of the EEE, talking to his nephew, the manager.

In context, the climate is brutal and enduring its brutality is a challenge within itself. The uncle is explaining that if his nephew can endure and conquer the climate, he will be able to accomplish things that others could not.
