The author's style was highly controversial when the novel was published. Hersey used six separate interviews to compile his text, enabling him to portray events in a way that many believed was a far too graphic and shocking for human consumption. Written as a narrative, Hersey created numerous sub-plots, moved easily and consistently between characters, and wrote in chronological order.
