As stanley becomes stronger and his skin becomes tougher from digging the holes, how is he changing inside? What are the causes of those changes?

Stanely becomes more confident in himself. He has a set of fellow "inmates" with a common adversary. Being outside digging holes toughens him physically but also toughens his resolve to better himself.
