This statement was ironic because nobody believed him either way.

Now, as Stanley lay on his cot, he thought it was kind of funny in a way. Nobody had believed him when he said he was innocent. Now, when he said he stole them, nobody believed him either.

Why do the boys say that each consecutive hole is more difficult than the previous one?

“What are we supposed to be looking for? Stanley asked him. “You’re not looking for anything. You’re digging to build character. It’s just if you find anything, the Warden would like to know about it.” Mr. Pendanski mentions that if Stanley finds something noteworthy, he will get the day off. However, he does not specify why they are digging the holes or what they are looking for. Why do you think this is?
