How does Henry Sacrifice his education?

Henry is forced to take a back seat to white students, he suffers racism and taunting on a daily basis from both teachers and classmates. He has to work "off" his scholarship in the school cafeteria during lunch and after school..... in addition to the fact that the only reason he is attending Ranier is because he cannot return to China for his education because of the Japanese.
