What was Henry looking for all along in the Panama Hotel basement and why is he disappointed?

Henry was looking for memories in the hotel basement. When the narrator talks about the things brought up from the basement of the hotel as being things that were “saved for a happier time that never came”, he/she indicates these represent the disappointments and unexpected circumstances that life can bring.
