Simon Rosedale meets Lily Bart outside of Selden’s apartment; he is also the owner of the apartment building. As a Jew, he is portrayed by Wharton in an anti-Semitic light. His Jewish heritage keeps him out of the rich and wealthy world of old New York and dashes his hopes of a marriage to Lily. His wealth with not bring him acceptance.

I'll be back to give you textual evidence.
