In describing her house, or where she lives, what does Esperanza convey about her self identity?

In Esperanza's description of her home, and even the description of her family's apartment, we see that her identity is largely shaped by the shame of poverty. In the first chapter, and as the novel progresses, we see that Esperanza's desire for a real home will come to shape her individualism, as well spark her evident determination.
