Esperanza has to take care of her annoying little sister. During this time, she prays for a best friend. I don't think she ever really gets a special friend. Esperanza has friends to be sure but she never feels fully comfortable with them. Esperanza has a lot to contend with though. She is a visible minority and quite conscious of her poverty. Her insecurities combined with her teenaged angst make it difficult for Esperanza to simply find a best friend.
