For Esperanza and her parents the American dream means a house and security of ownership: it is an image of a white house, big enough for their whole family. The struggle to achieve that house is arduous. Esperanza finally achieves this goal. She gets a house of her own but to her, its greatest joy is giving her the freedom to write.
