What are the ways in which Marin is older? Is this a reference to age, or something else?

Marin is much more, at least she says she is, sexually experienced than Esperanza and the other girls on the street. Marlin gives the girls all kinds of advice including pregnancy, make up, and boys in general. Esperanza thinks she is so much older.
