Darius has not allowed himself to be defined as a boy from the "barrio"=," and so he is more his own person than some of the other people with thom he associates. The was he acts on the outside (tough) is not necessarily the was he acts when he is alone. He is more poetic like Esperanze;he does not want to be like that, and he wants to not consider the rough and tumble life of the barrio.
