In this chapter, Esperanza sits awkwardly at her cousin's baptism party because her brown school shoes do not match her pretty new pink and white party dress. She notices a boy staring at her which makes her feel good. Convinced by her Uncle Nacho to finally dance, Esperanza finally loses her shyness and feels like a woman under the admiring gazes and clapping hands of the party. This is very much a coming of age moment for Esperanza.
