How It Feels to Be Colored Me

This essay is defined by its strange confrontational energy. By speaking boldly and directly, Hurston reminds her readers that she is actually responding to unspoken prejudices. She isn't just writing an essay about how she feels, or about what her life is like, although she does a little of both in the essay. What she's really doing, though, is reminding the reader to go back through their beliefs to see if there is prejudice against black people. She bemoans the fact that white people don't celebrate black culture, and she advocates for the beauty of her heritage. Her argument (that white people still sometimes look down on black people and black culture) was certainly true when this essay was published, and in certain places, it is still true today.
