What point is Hurston trying to make in her first paragraph? Is she “the only Negro in the United States whose grandfather on the mother’s side was not an Indian chief”?

I think that Hurston is using a bit of humor here. Some critics claim that "Indian Chief" is a euphemism for "white master:"An allusion to the idea that white owners raped their black female slaves to create more slaves, Hurston is also trying to point out the large rainbow of colored people that America is made up of.
