Do you sympathize with Pahom? Why or why not?

I sympathize with Pahom's inability to define and judge the quality of his life by his family and accomplishments.... the things that make a person genuinely happy. It is difficult, however, to sympathize with the fact that he sets aside all the things that might have made him happy to destroy himself as a result of greed and pride.
