What forced David to leave the village in Italy i think?

David saves a girl in Italy from a burning barn. The family of the girl likes him. After overhearing Maria's parents express their concerns to each other about how strange he seems, David again fears that he will be returned to the Nazis and flees. I think David also doesn't want to get comfortable in one spot, he needs to carry on with his quest to Denmark.
