Why does David hate the man?

I assume you are referring to the unnamed Commandant. If so, David hates him because he keeps him imprisoned. He also hates him because he had a relationship with his mother. Fortunately, that relationship, and the love the Commandant had for David's mother ends up being the source of his freedom.
