Why is the soap so significant? Why was it found in the guards drawer?

The soap is shown in many scenes and chapters throughout the book and film. How do we learn about it in the book and the film? How is it shown?

David is so dirty from the camp. He never bathed. Having soap turns him into a new person again when he was finally able to wash. The guard gave David the soap from his drawer.
