how are the concepts of place and identity explored in I am Malala

Malala explores issues about religious, ethnic, gender, and human identity throughout the book. The Taliban control the Swat Valley in Pakistan. Malala must contend with gender discrimination as well as reconciling her religion with the ultra conservative Islam forced onto people by the Taliban. Malala must consider what it means to be an educated girl in a society that discourages girls to go to school. Malala also identifies as a citizen of the planet rather than being labeled as a rebel or even a hero.
