I Am Not your Perfect Mexican Daughter
Do you think she knows she needs support? Does Julia seek help or tough it out?
In Chapter 9, we start to see Julia unravel: “I’ve always had trouble being happy, but now it feels impossible” (p. 116). “Sometimes I feel so lonely and hopeless that I don’t know what to do” (p. 117). Though she thinks of herself as strong, Julia acknowledges that “I’m missing something…but I can’t figure it out” (p. 120). In Mexican culture, seeking mental help is taboo, a sign of weakness.
