The "aristocrat" of black Stamps, Ms. Flowers is a gracious woman who encourages Maya's love of literature, and also helps Maya to break out of her muteness. Bertha Flowers is a poet, a writer, and a true artist: everything that Maya loves. Maya regards her as the pinnacle of humankind.
