What are symbols? How has the poet used symbols to convey the deeper meaning of the poem?

A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially some material representing something abstract. Like the caged bird is representing a physically or mentally caged human but a free bird is representing a human who can achive goals,be free etc.
