Maya is an author and a poet so we can probably surmise that literature was a big part of her childhood. Maya was reading plays and books when most kids were learning how to right words. She loved Shakespeare and then felt guilty about it because Shakespeare was a white man. Both Maya and her brother use literature as a form of escape from their troubled childhood.
